Rise of the Empire

Long before the desert was known chiefly through ruins, Shurima was an empire held together by conquest, wealth and the extraordinary power of its Ascended. The Sun Disc stood at the heart of its vision of authority. Through Ascension, selected mortals could become god-warriors whose strength extended the reach of rulers who remained human.

The empire's achievement should not be confused with a peaceful agreement among all its peoples. Shuriman rule brought different lands into a hierarchy centered on the imperial power. Icathia's later rebellion reveals the resentment that could endure beneath that order, including the suppression of a conquered culture and its institutions.

The Ascended gave Shurima an authority that ordinary armies struggled to challenge. Nasus and Renekton show two forms of service within that system: scholarship and strategic judgment beside exceptional martial force. Their relationship began in mortal life, before the ritual transformed the scale of what they could do.

For those living under the empire, the Sun Disc could represent protection, ambition, submission or the possibility of elevation. Azir eventually inherited that world and sought to take his own place among the god-warriors. His reign belongs late in the ancient empire's story, after the catastrophe at Icathia had already revealed the danger of powers beyond imperial control.

The rise of Shurima is therefore the beginning of several later histories. Its conquests created grievances, its Ascended survived disasters their institutions could not, and its symbols remained powerful long after the capital fell. Following those threads in order makes the ruins meaningful: they are the remains of a political world whose ambitions still shape the people moving through them.
