The Three Sisters
The history of the Three Sisters lies beneath the modern Freljord like a landscape buried in snow. Avarosa, Serylda and Lissandra belong to an ancient period in which powerful beings openly contested the world. Their names survive in competing traditions, but the stories told by later generations do not all preserve the same truth.
Lissandra's bargain with the Watchers promised extraordinary power. In return, those beings sought entry into a world they could not fully comprehend. The arrival of that threat revealed the terrible scale of the exchange. Confronted with the destruction it would bring, Lissandra turned against the bargain she had made.
Her response buried the Watchers in an immense prison of ice, sacrificing lives on a catastrophic scale, including her sisters. That act did not destroy the danger. It concealed and delayed it. Lissandra's long survival became inseparable from maintaining the prison and managing what later generations were allowed to know.
The Frostguard preserve a controlled version of history, while other legends continue to circulate among the tribes. Avarosa's name is carried into the present by people who see hope in Ashe; Serylda's legacy and the claims surrounding the old sisters remain part of a contested inheritance. These beliefs influence politics, but belief in a returned destiny should not be presented as an independently established fact.
The sisters matter because the ancient catastrophe is unfinished. Modern conflicts over leadership take place above a threat that predates them by millennia. The reader is following two histories at once: the stories people use to imagine their future, and the secret Lissandra struggles to keep from consuming that future entirely.
