The Blessed Isles were remembered as a place of life, knowledge and sacred protection. That earlier beauty is essential: without it, the Shadow Isles would only be a spooky destination. With it, the region becomes a story about the destruction of something precious.

Guardians, healers and living magic gave the Isles a sense of reverence. Maokai and Yorick matter because they keep pieces of that memory alive, proving that the land was not born cursed. It was wounded into becoming what it is now.

Viego's grief is the emotional spark. His love for Isolde curdles into obsession, and his royal power gives that obsession the ability to break sacred boundaries. The disaster is not frightening because grief exists; it is frightening because grief is given command of armies, relics and forbidden magic.

This is why The Ruination reads like tragedy before horror. The moment of attempted restoration becomes an act of violation. A place built around sanctity is forced to answer a demand it was never meant to fulfill.

The Ruination began with a death that King Viego would not accept. Isolde's loss transformed his grief into an obsession with restoration. The search for a cure had led toward the Blessed Isles, but the possibility of healing became something more dangerous when the king demanded that the boundary between life and death be crossed.

The Blessed Isles had preserved extraordinary knowledge and powerful artifacts behind careful protections. Viego's arrival brought the violence of Camavor into that guarded world. Kalista's loyalty and Hecarim's ambition became part of the catastrophe, while Thresh found opportunity inside a place that had previously confined him to a lesser role.

When the attempt to restore Isolde collided with the powers of the isles, the result was not the reunion Viego imagined. A magical disaster consumed the land and its inhabitants. The protective mist was transformed into the Black Mist, and the Blessed Isles became the Shadow Isles.

Death no longer brought a clean ending to those caught within the catastrophe. Personal desires, rage and suffering continued in altered forms. Viego's fixation endured, but so did other wills that could exploit, resist or remain trapped within the new condition of the islands.

This ancient Ruination must be distinguished from the later spread of the Mist and the conflict involving the Sentinels. The first event created the wound; subsequent stories follow its consequences reaching the wider world. A chronological reading begins with the Blessed Isles and the king's loss, then moves forward to the people living under the shadow of what he unleashed.

Viego inherited a kingdom without having been prepared to place its needs above his own desires. His love for Isolde became the center of his life, and her death exposed the danger in allowing a ruler's private grief to command public power. A kingdom's resources and soldiers could be turned toward a refusal that no ordinary person could enforce on the world.

Kalista's efforts to find healing brought hope from the Blessed Isles. By the time that hope reached the king, the situation had changed. Viego did not want to preserve a life that might still be saved; he wanted to reverse a loss that had already occurred.

The invasion of the islands carried other people's ambitions and loyalties into that demand. Hecarim, Kalista and Thresh did not all want the same outcome. Their decisions shaped the catastrophe, making the fall more than a private tragedy taking place in isolation.

The Ruination gave Viego an existence in which his obsession could continue after death. Yet Isolde's wishes cannot be reduced to his belief that love entitles him to possess her. The broader story repeatedly returns to that difference. The fall of the islands is the regional consequence of a ruler who could not accept that the person he loved had a life, and an ending, beyond his control.

Then move beyond the islands. Harrowings bring the Black Mist into the lives of coastal communities, and Lucian and Senna lead into the struggle of the Sentinels. These later conflicts occur after the ancient Ruination; they are consequences of the wound, not alternative descriptions of its beginning.
