Biography & reading · THE RUNE

A narrative retelling by The Rune, based on Riot Games’ published lore.

Naafiri’s story

For centuries, Naafiri’s existence had been confined to a throwing dagger lying inside a Shuriman crypt. Her spirit remained awake, but the weapon gave her neither movement nor a voice. Memory was all that captivity left her: the power she had once possessed, the rivals she believed she could overcome, and the rule over the darkin that had seemed within her reach. Myisha, an Aspect, had deceived her, and those ambitions had ended inside steel. The more she returned to her former greatness, the more unbearable her helplessness became. Escape required a living body. If someone touched the weapon, she could take a host and act upon the world again.

When a visitor finally entered the crypt, the possibility of that touch transformed her long wait into hope. He was human, close enough to lift the blade, and apparently the answer to everything her imprisonment had denied her. Yet he understood what he had found. He used metal tongs to handle the dagger and enclosed it in a thick cloth lined with lead, taking care to keep his own flesh clear of the weapon. Naafiri left the tomb as an object in his possession. The man rode away across the desert in the afternoon, carrying her with him, while the movement of his horse reminded her that another creature still decided where she went.

As evening approached, the horse quickened its pace. Distant howls announced the dune hounds, the roaming predators whose packs made the Shuriman sands dangerous to travelers. Their hunger offered Naafiri another opening. She reached toward the animals in a silent summons, drawing them toward the rider and his mount. She still imagined a human vessel: under attack, the man might loosen the wrapping, mishandle the dagger, or brush its edge in a moment of panic. She needed only one failure in his careful precautions. The same danger that threatened his life might finally give her a life of her own, and with it the means to pursue the ambitions that had survived the crypt.

The hounds closed around the rider. Even then, he remembered the danger of the blade, keeping the wrapped weapon against him with one arm while drawing his sword with the other. That divided defense could not withstand the pack. The animals attacked from every side and overwhelmed both the man and his horse, consuming the bodies. Naafiri’s imagined future in a human host disappeared with her captor. What followed brought an entirely different release. Sensation returned all at once: desert air, the taste of blood, the presence of other hounds. After centuries of stillness, the world reached her through living bodies again, with an intensity that left her struggling to understand where she herself began and ended.

She could see one dog through the eyes of another. Each body carried a part of her awareness, and every packmate belonged to the same bewildering experience. The dagger had given her many vessels together; her consciousness now extended throughout the pack. Freedom had arrived in a form she considered an insult to everything she had been. She despised the animals’ smell and their fleas, and recoiled from their constant need for one another. The darkin who had dreamed of surpassing her rivals now depended on creatures whose lives revolved around hunger and companionship. Being able to move again did little, at first, to reconcile her with that transformation.

Living through the hounds gradually changed what Naafiri understood about them. Their dependence was the reason they survived. A solitary dog could go hungry in the desert, while the pack could bring down prey beyond the reach of any one animal. Their shared instincts made a kind of intelligence, expressed through the way they hunted and lived together. Naafiri began to recognize strength in the very bond she had resented. Her new existence joined her to that collective life, and the lesson reached deeper than the usefulness of having several bodies. She had been judging the hounds by the ambitions of an individual warrior; the pack’s power belonged to its unity.

That discovery brought her back to the past she had spent so long revisiting in the crypt. The darkin had been divided by private grievances, rivalries, and competing purposes. Naafiri herself had remembered those rivals as opponents to defeat on her way to ruling them. Through the hounds, she could now see another possibility. The cooperation that sustained a pack was a pattern she recognized in other living things, from small creatures to human communities. It could also offer her scattered kin a way to recover their lost dominance. The animals she had considered beneath her had revealed a weakness in the mighty beings she had once wanted to command.

Naafiri emerged from that realization with a purpose that extended beyond her own escape. She would seek the other darkin and bring them the understanding she had found within the pack. Her change did not extinguish her hunger for power: unity promised to make the darkin formidable predators again. The difference lay in how she now believed that strength could be achieved. Her biography leaves that reunion ahead of her, a goal still to pursue across Runeterra. For now, the will that once waited alone inside a dagger moves through the Shuriman desert in many bodies, carrying a shared hunger and a conviction learned from the hounds that set her free.

A place in Runeterra

Shurima

Her story unfolds in Shurima’s desert, from a sealed crypt to the hunting grounds of the dune hounds.

Shurima’s ancient empire united much of the south under the power of Ascended warriors. Rebellion, the Void and the failed Ascension of its final emperor left legacies that outlived the capital’s destruction.

People now survive among deserts, oases and buried ruins as traders, settlers, mercenaries and treasure seekers. Azir’s return raises the possibility of restoration, but the empire’s former glory is not the only perspective on its past. Read those who ruled alongside those who suffered under it.
